21st century church | The church as a democratic space within the city
The church as a democratic space within the city, with modern uses that maintain its traditions and spirituality, whilst opening its space to the residents, church people and pilgrims.

The project deals with the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, the church is one of the holiest places in Christianity and an important urban monument. Even though Nazareth is considered a very crowded city with a shortage of public areas for people, this church occupies a very large area in the center of the city, and is closed off to all residents.
The idea of the project is to open the church to the community, so that a diverse audience can enter a common space while preserving the religious character of the place.
The effect of this change to open up the church will be felt throughout the whole city. This opens up the possibility for transition and access between the different areas, and the idea of an “urban trip” in the religious space.
